Engineer: a career with a social responsibility

Companies are increasingly aware they can no longer produce today without thinking about the human and environmental consequences of their activity. Involved in decision-making processes that affect employment, scarce resources and the quality of life, the engineer has an important civic and social responsibilty. The Ecole des Mines de Nantes has therefore set aside a significant part of the teaching program, particularly through student projects, to focus on these issues. Its future engineers are given the tools necessary for their managerial functions, but above all they are made aware of their social responsibility – high-level training coupled with strong values.

To be formed, with strong values

For us, training an engineer is founded on the respect of a set of constraints that bear a name: sustainable development. This is the guiding principle of the teaching at EMNantes , understood in its broadest sense: not only responding to environmental constraints, but also a corporate governance and human resource management that respect certain values.
EMNantes cannot require its students to acquire such an awareness without itself leading by example. It therefore has laid great emphasis on two major components of sustainable development: an ecological management of the campus as a whole (energy diagnosis, car sharing, waste recycling ) and a mode of governance that meets ethical criteria (transparency, consultation, diversity of recruitment, etc.).
With its students, the Ecole des Mines de Nantes has launched an ambitious challenge to live up to its commitment in society: that of changing behaviour. Its goal is not to train specialists of sustainable development, but engineers who will transmit their values and exert a positive influence in their future careers.
