La formation

A competence based approach has been adopted by the Ecole des Mines de Nantes . Its aim is to establish a competency profile in terms of specific career paths. This competency profile has been established for each of the options (majors) of the graduate school.

For the sake of clarity, the main target competencies expected by companies at recruitment have been grouped into 8 major aptitudes

  • C1 : The ability to explain physico-chemical phenomena and calculate the performance of energy equipment;
  • C2 : The ability to calculate the energy, environmental and economic performance of energy generation systems
  • C3 : The ability to explain, calculate and discuss the interest, characteristics and performance of renewable energy from a technical and economic point of view ;

  • C4 : The ability to explain and discuss issues of sustainable development with regard to local, national and international impact;
  • C5 : The ability to carry out energy and environmental audits for companies and local authorities ; process and analyze the results, and make proposals;

  • C6 : The ability to manage a complex energy project taking into account economic, social and environmental issues;
  • C7 : The ability to model, simulate or test a complex energy system in the static or dynamic. Process and analyze the results ;
  • C8 : The ability to work in teams, communicate orally and in writing (in an international context) ; implement the values of sustainable development (listening, respect, transparency, solidarity, ...).

This approach in eight key competences gives a rapid visualisation of the profile of the future professional, and serves as a basis for exchange with the academic staff, especially with regard to the student’s career project.
Like any such approach, the difficulty lies in the balance between a reasonable number
of sufficiently explicit aptitudes and the relevance (qualitative and quantitative) of the
evaluation of these aptitudes.
This type of web approach and profile is found in some large companies.
