Real software engineers

François Laburthe
former director of the Research Laboratory of Bouygues

" For their graduation project we have hosted two students in the e-lab, which works for all the companies of the Bouygues group. Starting from a clearly identfied problem, both students had to propose a solution that is a generic software product.

JJean-Sébastien Brunner worked on a search engine to explore a database on the experts working for Bouygues Construction, William Lutton created a discrete event simulator that was used to model both a call center and a postal distribution center. There was no obvious solution at the outset. They had to explore ideas, implement them, compare the results, refine, correct, optimize performance, then package it all to make reusable products.

They were both real computer engineers, able to develop, propose solutions, implement them and use a testing protocol. They knew how to work independently and make suggestions for improvement. More importantly, regardless of their abilities in project management, on which all schools rightly insist, they were above all very good at their core technical skills, which are often neglected. Moreover, Jean-Sebastien has since done a PhD and has been hired by IBM in their research laboratory in China. His professional future is bright.. "
