The recruitment of PhD students
Thesis proposals are sent out by research PhD supervisors of departments or laboratories, and are sometimes available on laboratory websites. At the same time the research supervisor seeks funding and a candidate for the thesis proposal.. Masters graduates can send their applications directly to the supervisor.
NB: Nowadays, , Master’s level engineering graduates no longer need to have done a Research Master in order to apply for a PhD thesis.
Study supervision, training and employability of doctoral students
The secretariat of each department submits a request to the relevant doctoral school once the doctoral candidate’s recruitment has been validated.
The PhD student is at one and the same time both an employee under contract to his/her employer and a doctoral student, enrolled in an institution of higher education.
The institution in which the doctoral student is enrolled awards the PhD of the specialty of the doctoral school for which the institution is accredited.
At the same time as his / her enrolment at EMNantes, the PhD student must also register in the relevant Regional Doctoral School according to the thesis topic area .
Doctoral students must take a hundred hours of courses, in both science and professional training, validated by the doctoral school in which they are enrolled.

When he/she is recruited, the student registers with the institution that funds the PhD, except in the case of funding from a ministry or government, for example. The place of registration depends on the the administrative attachment of his/her supervisor .
The student is responsible for his/her registration, for updating administrative data in the "PhD Management System " database, in case of change of supervisor for example,, and also for registering for his/her thesis defence.
Administratives process :
Application forms and thesis defense forms are available on the PhD management database called "SGD", using the PhD’s personal URL address ,given at the time of enrollment.
